Product design for a legendary brand

Performing full-scale projects, when in addition to creating a product design of an article there are performed inner construction works together with issuing the related technical documentation, became a distinctive feature of SmirnovDesign on the product development market in Russia. Besides, more and more the company faces projects based on elaborate marketing strategies of introducing a new product to the market or, as in this case, on the necessity to bring an old brand back to life.

One of such projects, aimed at creating the appearance of a car audio series with precise tasks based on the special marketing positioning as well as available technological possibilities has been successfully completed by specialists of SmirnovDesign. The designers faced quite a difficult task: to design products based on new stylistic solutions according to the modern car audio design trends that nevertheless would have the features of a legendary brand with a long history. Besides the project complexity was determined by technical limitations as the model uses the base of the previous car audio’s chassis that are reliable in the matter of acoustic equipment integration into a modern car. Thus, the aim of the project was to create a product design of a detachable panel for a new lineup of car audios integrated with previous linking elements and chunk mechanisms.

While working on the first project stage – sketching – several designers were engaged and each was able to bring his vision and his unique style in designing the image of the new car audios. Many sketches were created allowing to set out several main stylistic courses associated with high level of the produced items and the legendary brand image. After analyzing the courses which first amounted to about ten, four main vectors were selected for the future work:

1.Classical – emphasizing the brand history,
2.Young – dynamic and sporty,
3.Striking – based on unusual graphic composition,
4.Commercial – featuring more relaxed and balanced lines.

3D modeling

After the main design styles had been selected, SmirnovDesign’s design engineers joined the project. Their task alongside with product designers was to design the products’ exterior surfaces, though these experts were actively involved in discussing the design and its compatibility with the product design features already at the sketching stage.

The base of the company’s drafting department is composed of highly effective CAD/CAM modeling systems consisting of solid and surface modules aimed at creating a 3D mathematical product «architecture». 3D-modelling of all the selected stylistic trends was performed by the experts within a very short period of time – the visual images of all the models were completed in almost two weeks. They helped to carry out a detailed engineering analysis and optimize the future assembly operations.

Photorealistic visualisation

Creating photorealistic renders is one of the most necessary stages in the process of designing a new product. Its results are especially valuable for the client as he can get the idea of the future product at all the possible angles. What is more important, as the task of this project was to create a car audio with a striking unique image the renders made by designers were complemented with expressive promotional graphics that was to emphasize the integrity of the car audio design and the image of the legendary brand.

Indeed, it was at this stage that SmirnovDesign’s creative department made the foundation of the future promotional campaign aimed at bringing a legendary brand back to the market.

Configuration design and production documentation

The final stage of designing a car audio was the creation of 3D models of all the joints and the product configuration. Together with an electronic engineer the final assembly was carried out that consequently became the base of the circuit plate order. After the prototyping stage indispensable in any process of industrial design the finishing strokes were applied set to improve the new car audio’s design and construction.

After completing all the works related to configuration design in accordance with international standards the whole production documentation was released that became the basis of the car audio manufacturing cycle.
